Henry is welcomed back by the citizens of his town, all of whom are aware that he is gay and are somehow accepting and supportive of him. The film stars my friend Arye Gross as Henry Hart, a successful, but lonely gay artist who is reluctant to leave NYC and the life he has made for himself, but who returns to Big Eden, his small town in Montana, to take care of his grandfather. It was noticed though Big Eden did win awards at Gay and Lesbian film festivals : LA Outfest Audience Award, San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Audience Award, and Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival Audience Award, and it was nominated for Best Film at the 2002 GLAAD Media Awards. When it was first released, before streaming, it flew under the radar of most LGBTQ film fans, and that’s a shame. It has no overwhelming tragedy and it avoided stereotypes without sidestepping its gayness. At last, here was a project that depicted gay men of all shapes, sizes, and ages navigating the treacherous waters of love just like anyone else. ![]() It takes on themes of friendship, love and gayness seen through a prism of highly idealized tolerance, acceptance, kindness, humor and tenderness.īig Eden was a breakthrough film. Big Eden (2000), written and directed by openly gay filmmaker Thomas Bezucha, is an especially lovely, charming film fantasy. This fresh new HD version of the trailer above looks terrific. While even Roger Ebert noted the film’s implausible premise that a community of small-town characters could be so heartwarmingly pro-gay, writer-director Bezucha struck the perfect chord of wish fulfillment as thirty-something closet case Henry (played by the charmingly average Arye Gross) revisits his hometown and comes up against his straight high school crush Dean (played by Matt Bomer‘s hunky White Collar co-star Tim DeKay) and possible new love interest Pike (the terrific Eric Schweig, who won the Best Actor award at Outfest for his performance). Big Eden has since gone on to secure a steady home on most Top 100 gay film lists and it is finally being released on Blu-ray for its 15th anniversary in October. At that time it was known as the most honored film in the history of gay and lesbian film festivals. When Thomas Bezucha’s Big Edenwas first released in 2000 (five years before the Northwestern-set Brokeback Mountain and two years after the Wyoming murder of Matthew Shepard), the gay rural love story set in the fictional town of Big Eden, Montana earned best film awards at Outfest, Frameline and other LGBT film festivals as well as being nominated for a GLAAD Media Award.
