Bioluminescence involves highly efficient chemical reactions that result in the release of light with little or no emission of heat. Fireflies are a good example of an organism that produces light, but there are others as well, such as certain species of fungus, fish, shrimp, jellyfish, plankton, glowworm beetles, and gnats. The production of light by living organisms is called bioluminescence. Males typically flash while they are flying, and females, which are usually stationary, flash in response. Most species produce a greenish-yellow light, but others have more of a blue or white light. Each species has a characteristic pattern that helps male and female individuals recognize and find each other. Once they mature into the adult form, they only live for about 3-4 weeks and many do not feed.įirefly flash patterns are part of their mating display. Most of their lifecycle is spent in the larval stage (1-2 years), where they feed on snails, worms, and smaller insects in the leaf litter on the forest floor. Ironically, don’t use any flash photography to take a picture of your fireflies. Always release them at night when they are most active and able to easily get away from predators.ħ. Don’t keep a firefly in a jar for more than 10 minutes. Fireflies fly upwards, and should fly up out of the net into the jar.Ħ. Gently encourage the firefly into the jar by turning the jar upside down with the net underneath. Once they are in the net, clamp the top of the net off with your hands after making sure the firefly is at the bottom.ĥ. Make sure to be gentle, they are very fragile.Ĥ. Carefully, or with the help of a parent, poke holes in the lid to allow airflow and place a moist paper towel at the bottom of the jar to keep the humidity.ģ.
